Kuwait CSP tender tests efficiency gains in oil field steam generation

Solar Enhanced Oil Recovery has become a competitive technology for Middle East heavy oil producers looking to reduce on-site gas and oil consumption amid rising national power demand, industry experts told New Energy Update.

Kuwait is currently finalizing tender terms for a CSP steam production plant at a heavy crude oilfield operated by the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). The state-owned operator plans to use solar steam for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) to reduce natural gas consumption and free up domestic hydrocarbon resources for export, a strategy already deployed in nearby Oman.

Kuwait is among a number of Gulf countries which rely on costly liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports or diesel to power oil production as well as domestic power generation. In regions with high direct normal irradiance (DNI) levels, solar EOR offers heavy oil producers a competitive alternative to fossil fuel-fired energy production.
